Titane (Expat Cinema)

EXPAT CINEMA is our monthly screening of a brand-new non-English arthouse film with English subtitles.

As a child, Alexia got involved in a traumatic car accident. Now, as an adult, Alexia is still obsessed with cars: she earns a living as a popular, sensual dancer at car shows, and she even seems to have developed a strange, sexual attraction to shiny ironwork. After one of her fans harasses her on a parking lot, a sudden outburst of violence makes her life take a radical new direction...

This innovative piece of queerpunk cinema was the surprising winner of the Palme d?Or at the latest Cannes Film Festival. The French Julia Ducournau thus became only the second female director winning the prize in the history of the festival. With its layered and quirky view on body politics and gender normativity, the film divides audiences and critics. But one thing is for sure: Titane is the most insane film of the summer, surpassing the weirdness of other freak directors like Lynch and Cronenberg.

PRESS

"Titane is obviously the work of a supremely talented film-maker who calculates her effects with masterly precision, and we are seeing the beginnings of a great career." - The Guardian

"This is a movie that needs to be seen on a big screen with even bigger sound and a screaming crowd surrounding you on all sides." - IndieWire
